Pubs as Social Infrastructure: The wellbeing value of connection and moderate drinking

A new research paper from WPI Strategy, commissioned by the British Beer & Pub Association, finds that UK pubs are vital social infrastructure, generating up to £30 billion a year in wellbeing benefits.

The report, Pubs as Social Infrastructure, highlights how pubs provide low-barrier opportunities for social interaction, community participation, and connection, particularly for older adults at risk of loneliness. Regular pub-based social interaction measurably increases life satisfaction, with nearly 30% of UK adults visiting pubs weekly. Pubs also strengthen communities by fostering civic pride, hosting events such as quizzes, live music, and charity fundraisers, and supporting intergenerational networks.

While not encouraging excessive drinking, the report notes that moderate alcohol consumption in pubs often accompanies these social activities, enhancing wellbeing. Policymakers are encouraged to recognise these benefits alongside harms to create proportionate, evidence-based alcohol and community policies.
